This:

(gui:background-process-run-function "foo" (lambda () (print 123)))

consistently causes CCL to hang with a SBOD. This:

(gui:background-process-run-function "foo" (lambda () (sleep 1) (print 123)))

works reliably.

Looks like some merging is going on, but why?

As I read the CLHS, user-homedir-pathname is supposed to return either a (presumably constant) pathname sans name, type, and version components -- or NIL.

Is this behavior conformant?

I get a crash when executing something like

(with-open-file (stream ucs-2-file :external-format :ucs-2)
   (print (read-line stream)))

The same for :utf-16. read-char() is OK.
